For a number of decades now we have all come to understand the ‘less is more’ design statement. A phrase to describe minimalism which has become ever more prevalent in interior design, particularly in kitchen design since Ikea first invited us to ‘chuck out our chintz’ in the 1996 TV advert.
Clean lines, greys and whites, smooth uncomplicated flat surfaces and the absence of patterns have made our kitchens full of light, serene, and calm places to function in our busy lives.
At Drew Forsyth &Co we have combined our beautiful hand made craftsmanship with the minimalist design demand from our clients, resulting in a gentle approach to the concept with exquisite results.
Encouraged by TV programs and the design media during the property boom years, our homes were often seen as commodities that may be sold in the near future and perhaps needed a bland approach in order to have a broad appeal for resale.
This may explain the more recent foray by restaurants and hotels, often leading domestic design, into Maximalism the ‘more is more’ antithesis of its predecessor. Fashion is cyclical, and responding to political climates, drives our taste and desire for what we want to see and experience in our environments.
Our properties are more recently perceived as less of a commodity and more to do with home and belonging. They are a place to negotiate the current climate, to emphasize our personal passion and creativity. It is very noticeable how involved our clients want to be in the design process at Drew Forsyth & Co. Visits to restaurants inspire a new daring to play with rich patterns and colour.
Our designers are increasingly encouraging our clients to embrace saturated colour and pattern alongside the ‘less is more’ concept. To express themselves in their projects with curated objects, mixed patterns and materials, and surprising splashes of bold colour. To engage with ‘More is More’.
In the Drew Forsyth showroom a glazed dresser cabinet has been lined with wallpaper from Timorous Beasties. This famous, Glasgow based design studio, handprint papers and textiles sharing our work ethic and the common birthplace with Drew’s own Scottish nationality; it is a perfect accessory in our showroom.
Visiting the new showroom at first glance the cabinets portray a sophisticated mix of dark green, timber and white marbled quartz worktops, it is only on investigating further, that the use of a luscious dark red on the interiors and sets us apart. What colour would you use to do this?
